Speaking good things makes you feel good, and when you feel good, you have no choice but to radiate that goodness into any environment you encounter.
I recently participated in a business review meeting where several executives were giving presentations. One very confident gentleman was preparing his talking points to present when a colleague leaned over to him and said, “This is a tough group, you’re gonna have a hard time presenting that.” Almost immediately, his confidence began to shift, just slightly. When it was time for him to present, his body language spoke very loud and clear that he was nervous. It almost seemed as though he was under some sort of spell…all of his preparations did not do him any good at all.
There is a proverb in the Hebrew Bible which reads, “Death and life are in the power of the tongue…”. You don’t have to be a religious scholar to know that there is major truth to this statement.
The things we say, and how we say them, can dampen days and crush spirits. It can even go so far as to put a dark cloud over situations, circumstances and relationships. I’m thinking now of some common phrases I hear: “People can’t be trusted”, “Men never change”, “Women are overly emotional”, “My child has the terrible twos”, “Traffic sucks”, “I hate Mondays”, “I’m never getting married”. These are just a few examples of things I hear people saying. And it’s no surprise that a negative outlook can cause certain aspects of one’s life to remain stagnant.
On the flip side, how we speak about things in our lives can also have a majorly uplifting effect. Just changing up a few words can make all the difference in the world. Speaking good things makes you feel good, and when you feel good, you have no choice but to radiate that goodness into any environment you encounter. This is definitely not to be confused with the whole ‘speak it into existence’ mantra, which I do not subscribe to. But this is more so an attitude adjustment about your day, every day.
